Podcast #9
Using podcasting as a teacher is great but having kids podcast is yet another way for students to demonstrate learning. Please plan on a lesson this semester that provides the opportunity for students to podcast. Start small - don't feel like you have to do it with every class you have. Talk to me prior to implementing with students so I can help you work through some details.
This is a valid means of assessing students. Keep it tied to the standards. Post a brief outline of your lesson. Lesson outline should include standards. objective, task, and assessment.

I LOVED the podcast that I did with my students. I had my seniors make a digital story from their "This I Believe" essay. The students wrote their essays, spent lots and lots of time editing...looking at leads, using specificity in writing, using personal narrative to set forth a larger, more general theme.
THEN students had to find pictures that related to their essay, storyboard their essay and pictures, download them onto PhotoStory and record their essay to fit with their photos.
We covered all the writing standards...2: Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences, 3:Students write and speak using conventional grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling and 4:Students apply thinking skills to their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.

For the past two exams I have offered the opportunity for students to create exam review podcasts. This was an extra credit assignment and the requirements were that they had to type up their script and make it into either a PowerPoint presentation to go along with their narration or type it up in Word and I posted it as a PDF file on Blackboard. I'm not sure if I would have thought of this requirement originally but one of my students is deaf and in order for all students to have equal access this became a necessity. In the end it was beneficial to all because some kids talked too fast and it helps to read while listening.
So far 5 student-produced podcasts have been created. One student is a thespian and she just simply enjoyed this form of performance. The others did it simply for the extra credit but they felt that it helped them on their exams to have to put together the information and to say it over and over as they were recording the audio track.
I was very proud of these students for their work and I will definitely continue to offer this opportunity in the future.
