Please post the name of the podcast you used in class with your students and a short reflection of how things went. What did the students think of it?
In health, my students were learning about stress. I found a very cool podcast that actually put the students through a relaxation exercise to help relieve stress. The name of the podcast was "Relax in Two Minutes." It was perfect for the classroom and a great introductory activity for the lesson. The kids loved it.
I used the "Mad Money" podcast/vidcast during class and the kids told me that they've seen this guy a lot on CNN. It was great! A lot of groups used his advice when they began to buy their stocks for the stock market game. Very cool!
In Spansih level 4 we listened to a podcast from Spain Called NOTES IN SPANISH. It is one of many authentic spanish speaking lesson on stereotypes of Spaniards....which went right along with our theme of stereotypes in our text. The students thought it was great to hear a true castillian accent and try to pinpoint the language nuances of native speach. Great resource!!
I have used 60-second Science a few times in class. Because the hosts speak so quickly I have to tell them what the title is before hand to prepare them, then ask some questions after it has played and then replay it so they have another opportunity to extract the important information. The students were excited to hear a podcast but I'm not too sure this was the most enjoyable experience they have ever had. I think I will have to mix in podcasts with video too; however, I like to do attendance while they are listening and both cannot be done at once :-( Does anybody know if anyone at CTHS is playing the Grammar Girl podcast? I would like to use that once in a while too as writing is so important in science but don't want to step on anyone's toes!
In AVID, we listened to a couple of different podcast, and also one video cast. The first was the "MathGrad Podcast" which is made by a graduate student in math at CSU. The kids liked this one based on his speed of talking, and livelyness. The next one was "ACT, SAT, GRE test prep vocabulary" this one was very dry, no music, the kids tuned out very quickly. The videocast was by far the favorite, it was called "Episode 1: Trailtapes Mountain Biking." Listening to these with my class gave me great insight in what I should try to do.
